The novel by the award-winning Macedonian writer Venko Andonovski Azbuka for the Insubordinate (Azbuka za neposlushnite) was one of the first three books to be published in the 100 Slavic Novels series almost 15 years ago and has so far within this series been translated into Russian, Serbian and Slovenian.
It is an exciting fairy tale of the desire for purity and perfection, as well as a drama of a person overcome by all-encompassing vanity. Andonovski’s seemingly historical novel, in the form of allegory, paints powerful images of modern times. The ever-important issues get their full echo in the present-day dilemmas and challenges of us and our contemporaries.
